The first step to getting your driving license is choosing a driving instructor. They can guide you through the entire process and explain any questions you may have.
When starting your studies, you must apply for a study permit at ísland.is.

To do this, you need to have an electronic ID. You also need to take a passport photo to the sheriff.
When can you start?
When a person is 16 years old, they can start driving lessons. If the student intends to take a driving test, they must complete at least 10 practical hours before it begins. When the practical hours begin with a driving instructor, the student also takes driving school 1. If they do not want to take a driving test, it is enough to start the course a few months before their 17th birthday.
Finally
The written test can be taken 2 months before the 17th birthday and the practical test 2 weeks before the birthday. When it is time to do this, it is a good idea to meet with the driving instructor again and then take driving school 2 beforehand. A minimum of 15 practical hours must be taken, so that several hours are taken simultaneously with the written test, driving school 2 and 3, and the final practical test.
